Picturing Elizabeth: Her Life in Images

During her reign, The Queen became the most visually represented person in the whole of human history. From stamps to coins to formal portraits and snatched press photos, her image became an integral part of our everyday lives. The importance of what has become, in effect, a Royal “brand “developed throughout her time on the throne. In this documentary Sophie Raworth explores the stories behind some of the most famous and era-defining pictures and shows not only how they chart our changing relationship with monarchy but illuminate how the Royals wanted to be perceived.

Charles R.: The Making of a Monarch

As Prince of Wales, His Majesty was aware from an early age not just of the responsibilities that came with the role but of the challenges and possibilities it represented. As he once said, ‘My problem is that I haven’t got a role in a sense. I have to create one for myself’. Driven by a fierce sense of public duty and the desire to ‘make a difference’ - as well as by a personal quest for fulfilment - the young Prince Charles found ways to turn this ceremonial position into a vehicle to explore a wide range of ideas and to champion the causes that emerged from those explorations. Within a loosely chronological narrative, the film will follow his path through the early decades and milestones – childhood, his mother’s Coronation, education, his Investiture, serving in the Military - before establishing a more thematic structure that explores the Prince of Wales’s passions, work and causes. These would include the Arts, environmental concerns and supporting young people and disadvantaged communities. We will hear of the philosophies and convictions that underpin these priorities, tracing their roots back to the influences that shaped His Majesty's thinking and his outlook from an early age. Featuring an array of exceptional and often surprising audio and visual archive, as the next and greatest duty begins for our new King, the film will offer a unique and insightful retrospective of the man who was Prince of Wales for as long as the majority of us can remember.
